Making of The Ardagh Chalice.
The Ardagh Chalice was carved from a dead ash tree in the grounds of the disused Ardagh Railway station which now acts as a hub for the Limerick Greenway.
In 2021 I was contacted by Limerick City and County Council about a dead Ash on the new greenway in Ardagh that they were interested in carving. After discussion with the client, a design was agreed and you can see the result below.
The Limerick Greenway is a 39 km off-road walking and cycling route along the old railway line
that connects the three lovely market towns of Rathkeale, Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale in west Limerick.
The Ardagh Chalice from the 8th and 9th centuries was found in 1868 by two young local boys, Jim Quin and Paddy Flanagan, it is now on display in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin
